Citroën BX 14 RE 1987

This is my Citroen BX 14 RE it is a very comfortable car and it is perfect as tow car. I bought this car in 1994 then it had 105000 km on the odometer, now it has run 199950 km.
I filled the front spheres with gas a few weeks ago so now the car runs smother than ever, the rear speres was filled a year ago. The average fuel consumption is 8,2l / 100km , I think that this is a bit high but it might be caused by the studded winter tires. The best thing with this car is that it makes me happy when it wakes up and rises on its hydro-pneumatic suspension, this is a nice feeling.
I am a member of the Club Citroën Suedois it has got about 1200 members and it publishes a monthly magazine called Auto Gënial.
Check out this site its dedicated to CITROËN BX.

Reparations made to my car

I have bought some used parts from the local scrap yard, two switches for hazard lamps and foglights and the petrol filling pipe the old one had rusted away, the whole edge was gone so it was impossible to lock the cap. My BX14 has recently been repaired, one of the rear wheel bearings was replaced the brake discs and pads was replaced at the same time and a leaking front height adjustor was also replaced. Summer 2001 the engine suffered from lack of power, this was due to a leaking petrol hose before the petrol pump. When I took the suspension up to the highest level a year ago, the left rear suspension cylinder broke due to pit corosion in the aluminium housing.
This was repaired by the local Citroen specialist Birger, he had a replacement cylinder from a Citroën GS. The front brake discs and pads was replaced spring 2000. My car has also got new handbrake cables, the old ones got stucked, they were replaced for the second time since I bought this car. About two years ago i got a leak in the pipe to the left suspension strut, it was caused by corotion under a pipeholder jus beside the strut. Three years ago I had to replace most of the piping under the car due to corrotion damages, I also replaced the rusty rear brakediscs. Five years ago I renovated the front suspension struts with new gaskets and pistons.

It is 4,24 m long 1,68 m wide and 1,36 high, weighs 900kg and has got a top speed of 163 kmh.

What you should check when you buy a Citroën BX

The first thing to check is the hydraulic piping, here in Sweden it rust very quickly, between 1986 - 1990 there where no plastic coating on the pipes this made them rust even more. Another weak point is the rear disc brakes they need to be serviced at least twice a year otherwise the discs will rust, the hand brake cables goes through a loop on the suspension strut the loop "eats" the cable cover and the cable rusts together, also test drive the car on a bumpy road and listen if there are any rattling sounds, if there is the suspension might need renovation. If there is a clicking sound when the suspension raises the car just after start, the head pressure accumulator is empty or broken, the hydraulic clocks needs to be pressurized at least every fifth year. Check the drive shafts for oil leaks. Rust is no big problem except for the hydraulic pipes and the front axle bridge, bonnet and tailgate are made of plastic so they cant rust.

All of my French cars has got yellow light bulbs in their head lamps.
I hope that yours has got it to.

The history of Citroën BX

The new mid-sized car was unveiled on 23 September 1982 below the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Designed to slot into the Citroën range between the GSA and CX, it was initially available with a choice of 3 petrol engines (1360 cc and 1580 cc in various states of tune) and three levels of trim. Citroën described the shape of the BX, styled by Bertone, as "half way between art for art's sake and ultra banal styling" which "shows originality without being eccentric"
